Transformational Leadership
TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP
Luke 6:39, “And he speak a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? Shall they not both fall into the ditch?
The country and the continent at large are in dire need of leadership. The poverty, the scorch of HIV/AIDS, the war problem and bloodshed, the injustices, the rate of corruption, the backwardness of under civilisation are evidences of the need for leaders.
WHO IS A LEADER?
Genesis 33:14,”Let my Lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my Lord unto Seir.
The word leader is from a root word LEAD. In English, it is a verb which is an action word. So a leader is described by what he/she DOES!
1- A leader is one that knows the way. God’s people are going to a place. A leader knows the way through which they can get there. He/she knows the way to health, finance, prosperity, salvation, and healing. (Psalms 27:11, “Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.
2- A leader is a man of sight i.e. he has vision. What can he/she see? Not the problems of the people, but their success, health, salvation, better future just to name a few. (Psalms143:10, Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my GOD; thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.
3 -A leader is a man that knows the answers to all the questions of people. Because he/she knows the answers, he does not give excuses, neither does he complain. He/she must be able to know how to get resources to execute projects that will answer the problems of the people.
The day he/she starts complaining, he/she ceases to be a leader. Since it is usual for people to complain, the leader becomes part of the people when he/she starts complaining too. His/her ability to produce answers distinguishes him/her as a leader. (Psalms 61:2,”From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I).
4-The leader is a man who is always prepared. He/she is never caught unawares. He/she is prepared whether in the morning, afternoon or night. (Isaiah 3:12, “As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of the paths. Isaiah 11:6, “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. Isaiah 42:16, “And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.
5-A leader is a man of the future. He/she lives in the future of the people. He/she sees himself and the people in their future. He/she sees what the future looks like.
This gives him/her encouragement and hope (Acts 9:10-17, And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said Behold I am here Lord And the Lord said unto him, Arise and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for behold, he prayed, And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight. Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem: And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name. But the Lord said to him, go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel. For I will show him how great things, he must suffer for my name’s sake. And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, The Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou might receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.)
6 - A leader is not the one who is voted or called a leader: A leader is one whose heart seeks solution to present problems faced by the people in his community or church. If you ever wished that some things be done to create changes or you ever felt that some actions if taken will bring solution, then a seed of leadership is on the inside of you. Do not wait for an election or a mandate before you act. Begin at your small place and see God move you further. (Judges 5:12 “Awake, awake, Deborah: awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam”.)
WHY DO WE NEED LEADERS?
If one will be useful to his/her generation, serve, promote changes, generate blessings, he/she must know the reasons for leadership. Why are the people supporting you to be a leader? Why did they serve you or vote for you as a leader? I want to highlight three major reasons why leadership is needed. It is important to know that anybody who occupies the office of a leader and does not live to fulfil these points is certainly not a leader. He should either resign or change. (Isaiah 55:4, “Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people). Those people are:
1- Leaders who want to bring about the changes the people desire: The people are incapacitated in achieving this change. Therefore, they need someone who can bring it about, using his mental ingenuity, foresight, and ability to bring together resources that are presently latent in the community. It is important to know that every community is blessed with resources. (Judges 6:1-40).
2- Leaders are needed because of the existence of problems: These problems are diverse and multi-faceted. These problems range from marital to personal, psychological to medical, individual to communal, financial to professional etc. The people believe that only the leader knows what it takes to solve the problems. He/she also knows how to solve them.
3- Leaders are needed in order to produce other leaders: It takes a leader to breed another leader just like it takes a lion to breed another lion. Any community without a leader is a doomed community. That is why it is said that leadership without succession is failure. 2Timothy 2:2 “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also).
